Of all the outside food I ate in the past one month that I was in Australia, the most memorable and noteworthy is the Marrickville Pork Roll (Address: 236A Illawarra Rd, Sydney, NSW 2204). The combination of crispy bread roll, delicious pâté, and crunchy vegetables is really worth the detour (if you are nearby) and wait (queues can be long sometimes). At 4 AUD (~S$5) for a hearty portion enough for one person, it’s a steal not to be missed in Sydney.

So the other day I tried the S$5.90 bahn mi (aka pork roll) at NamNam Noodle Bar in Raffles City just for comparison. Given that this place is under the Les Amis group, I had great expectations. It was generally quite good, but the bread lost its crispiness after awhile (must be due to Singapore’s humidity), and the pâté wasn’t applied generously enough. There were a few bites that were just… bland and hard to swallow. At least the bahn mi comes with a free coffee/tea on weekdays from 8-10am. Marickville Pork Roll wins hands down.
